Week 3 with school age 2 was very fun and successful! The kids at first were a bit skeptical of the activity and didn’t quite understand what they were supposed to do but after we explained that they had a lot of freedom they were excited to find things they loved in the room to draw through their frames. It was really interesting to see what each child decided to draw, some groups loved card games, some minecraft and some sports. The children began using the materials as we showed them, tracing their items and colouring them in this group is very meticulous with their work, taking their time to make sure they get it right when they use materials like permanent markers. It is really awesome to see this kind of dedication to art and their work but we also had to make sure to let them know it’s okay to make mistakes and not be perfect when it comes to self expression. A few of the kids also move quickly and soon they were finished with their works and I think letting them know they had the freedom to make what they wanted and that it’s okay to make mistakes allowed them to try and explore new ways to use the materials we had brought for them. They stopped tracing what they liked and started to create their own images using their imagination. This new project ignited a brand new wave of excitement for the activity and the children kept coming back to create new compositions over and over. We had some kids make upwards of three new creations once they decided to let their imagination and creativity take over. One very memorable piece was an abstract work done by one of the kids that seemed very uninterested in the beginning of the activity. She seemed to not be excited about the project or materials we had brought in when we were tracing what we found to be interesting or what we liked, but once she realized she could create from her imagination she was quick to ask for a new piece of acetate to try her hand at it. She created an amazing work that she might not have if we as educators enforced using the materials as instructed. Allowing the children to be free with the materials we bring in, letting the kids change them from instructions to possibilities is incredibly important as it allows everyone to participate enthusiastically!

Why We Document
Pedagogical Documentation breathes life into Artasia, turning fleeting moments into lasting stories of creativity, resilience, and connection. It’s more than a record—it’s a celebration of the sparks of imagination that light up each child’s eyes, the bravery of parents stepping into new experiences, and the beauty of communities coming together through art. By capturing these moments, we not only honour the voices, dreams, and discoveries of our participants but also weave a narrative that inspires others. Documentation allows us to reflect on the magic we’ve created together, fuels our passion for what’s possible, and ensures that every joyful collaboration, every burst of color, and every heartfelt expression is remembered and cherished. It keeps the spirit of Artasia alive, inspiring us to dream bigger, reach further, and continue making art together.
