The school ages at this location were really fun to interact with, they had so many thoughts and ideas. The children were not all from Simcoe, they came from all surrounding areas so it diversified their answers in response to this year’s theme. The first week’s art project really captured the children’s attention, they filled up their time and claimed it wasn’t enough and that time flew by. By the fifth week they were imagining the most wild things. The children were really creative for their final week of our program. They were all sitting and participating, and we came up with something to add to our site for each of the senses. The smell of pop corn and hot dogs, or even flowers. Lots of pillows and blankets to feel soft and cozy. Birds filling the trees that sing songs, and a whole movie theater playing 100 movies all at once for seeing.

Someone ended up drawing the movie theater into the picture of the hallway. There was a drawing of an aquarium filled with axolotls above a casino with golden walls and a red carpet. Another child drew a play place with a giant slide into a ball pit. A whole bunch of people together for a playdate and a big playground in the background. Don’t forget about the magical transformation of the hallway into a squishy store filled with toy squishies.

Children love to explore their environment, they love seeing things for the first time and interpreting it through their own world view, art is a great way to express that interpretation. It’s a real joy to be a part of that learning process. One child’s efforts really stood out to me, he would always try his best to have an answer for every question I asked, not only would he have a verbal answer that really reflected his thoughts on the subject, he answered with his art too.

Why We Document

Pedagogical Documentation breathes life into Artasia, turning fleeting moments into lasting stories of creativity, resilience, and connection. It’s more than a record—it’s a celebration of the sparks of imagination that light up each child’s eyes, the bravery of parents stepping into new experiences, and the beauty of communities coming together through art. By capturing these moments, we not only honour the voices, dreams, and discoveries of our participants but also weave a narrative that inspires others. Documentation allows us to reflect on the magic we’ve created together, fuels our passion for what’s possible, and ensures that every joyful collaboration, every burst of color, and every heartfelt expression is remembered and cherished. It keeps the spirit of Artasia alive, inspiring us to dream bigger, reach further, and continue making art together.
