The activity for week five went really well! The children greatly enjoyed getting the opportunity to show what they imagined could make their space better or cooler. They created really amazing compositions that showcased how talented they are and how different they are too. The drawings were so varied it was really cool to hear them explain why they created what they did. I think these large differences came about because this is one of the weeks that we had all three school age groups participate together. As much as most of the children were very interested in this activity and immediately went to try their hand at making their pieces there was one child that initially had no interest in participating in the art activity. He was off in his own world enjoying his own company playing with a ball on the pavement and grass. As this child watched the other children create he seemed to become more and more interested in what we were offering, watching the groups getting excited and laughing about their creations. Eventually he came over to me and my coworker and asked us if he could still join in, we of course said yes and he got to drawing. Even though he came up to us to join in he still seemed to be acting a bit uninterested, but as he pushed through his first work he became much more enthusiastic. He ended up coming back once he was done to ask for more supplies to make another art piece and once he was done the second one he came back again, showing that he really did love to make art and express himself even when he seemed to not want to in the beginning. This experience really shows that sometimes participation isn’t something that adults can or should demand from children. We can encourage them to join and ask what about it doesn’t interest them but doing that can sometimes push them even further away from wanting to participate. Sometimes the atmosphere created by peers is more impactful than an adult asking them to just try for a little while. Sometimes the environment around them has to become inviting enough for the child to choose to join in.

Why We Document
Pedagogical Documentation breathes life into Artasia, turning fleeting moments into lasting stories of creativity, resilience, and connection. It’s more than a record—it’s a celebration of the sparks of imagination that light up each child’s eyes, the bravery of parents stepping into new experiences, and the beauty of communities coming together through art. By capturing these moments, we not only honour the voices, dreams, and discoveries of our participants but also weave a narrative that inspires others. Documentation allows us to reflect on the magic we’ve created together, fuels our passion for what’s possible, and ensures that every joyful collaboration, every burst of color, and every heartfelt expression is remembered and cherished. It keeps the spirit of Artasia alive, inspiring us to dream bigger, reach further, and continue making art together.
