Sound week using instruments, students discovered new ways to make sounds with each instrument including the kalimba in which they started knocking on the back of it which made a beautiful new sound. I had not considered playing instruments uniquely to find out what other sounds they’re capable of making, this same student showed me a rainmaker in the room that an on-site supervisor had made for them which had several holes in it causing it to leak rice when in use, this student then asked if she could make a rainmaker for me after I talked about the one in our space at the Arts For All and how much I enjoyed using it, I encouraged her creativity by asking what we could make it out of and she took a peek into my Artasia supply bag and pointed out the paper towel roll, she wanted the cardboard from the middle of it, I said sure let’s find a way to dig it out of the middle, we used a pencil like tool to fish it out of the middle of the roll and she took that and beads, and paper towels to seal the beads into the paper towel roll, then taping the paper towel outside of the roll concealing the beads shut tight into the now rainmaker, she gave it to me for me to have and told me to write Rainmaker on it, I still have this rainmaker and have been using it daily since she made this for me. It’s amazing to see the inspiration that sounds can bring people and I felt honoured to keep the rainmaker, I had a great time working with this group and will cherish the memories I’ve gotten to make while working with them and the rest of this summers artists.

Why We Document
Pedagogical Documentation breathes life into Artasia, turning fleeting moments into lasting stories of creativity, resilience, and connection. It’s more than a record—it’s a celebration of the sparks of imagination that light up each child’s eyes, the bravery of parents stepping into new experiences, and the beauty of communities coming together through art. By capturing these moments, we not only honour the voices, dreams, and discoveries of our participants but also weave a narrative that inspires others. Documentation allows us to reflect on the magic we’ve created together, fuels our passion for what’s possible, and ensures that every joyful collaboration, every burst of color, and every heartfelt expression is remembered and cherished. It keeps the spirit of Artasia alive, inspiring us to dream bigger, reach further, and continue making art together.
