Tuned In, World Out

At this location, we often had smaller crowds, sometimes as small as a single child. There was one child who was very inquisitive and creative while making our weekly craft. Even when no one else was there, he was always enthusiastic to quickly begin creating.

During one of the earlier weeks, his parent tried to encourage him to participate in the craft activity; instead, he seemed eager to play with the materials. In response, we decided to shift gears and indulge in some sensory play time. We spent that session just hanging out together, exploring the various art materials. By allowing him to play with the materials freely, he was still able to enjoy the creativity of manipulating different art materials.

On our last week, we were crafting Guardian personas, and this very same child had created multiple crowns, small creatures, and masks all by himself with no assistance whatsoever! It had reached a point where he was so engrossed in the craft that he didn’t realize it was time to go home. It was truly wonderful to witness a child so deeply immersed in creating things that the rest of the world seemed to have faded into the background.

Creativity can take many forms, and sometimes, it’s about letting children take the lead in their own unique ways. Whether fully immersed in crafting or enjoying the sensory pleasures of art materials, every moment is a chance for young minds to explore and express themselves.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Scroll through this gallery to witness the diverse artworks children created.

Can you hear the stories behind each of them?

Arts For All acknowledges the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. The City of Hamilton has developed an Urban Indigenous Strategy that will strengthen the City’s relationship with the Indigenous community and help promote a better understanding among all residents about Indigenous histories, cultures, experiences and contributions.
