Thinking of others

In Week 4, we talk about community and the importance of having them. We talk about the things we need within our community. But have we talked about what it means to participate in our communities, and do things for others?

I had encountered this issue a few weeks prior, when some of our students were struggling to understand why they should help clean up when they had already completed their work space, but others were still working.

After this week, I figured it out. It was about helping others. Being considerate. Things like neighbourhood cleanups, food drives, and shelters being present in our communities.

The art project we made this week brought these things to mind. There was even one girl who creatively wanted to make a pool and hot tub for people in our imaginary community to sit and relax in. It was very considerate and imaginative of her to think of that.

Around the end, the site supervisor and pedagogical head, Rachel, lead a discussion on communities, and things we can do to make things better both in our real and imaginary neighborhoods. We even began organizing a visit to a neighbourhood goods drop off pantry and refrigerator! Most kids were very invested and interested in participating in that. It was such an incredible thing to watch and participate in

Ambition V.S Time

Week 5 at Holy Name of Jesus there happened to be a huge interest in sewing, which was just perfect considering this week’s materials.

The second half of the session was smaller but very chill. We hung out on the floor and had some great conversations about a bunch of different things. The kids made drawings and swords and we had a pretty good time. One girl was making a girl-power sword and some accessories for it as I left.

In the first group, everyone had so many ambitious artwork ideas, and it was amazing to see.

Unfortunately the guardians of the camp seemed to encounter small obstacles to their big plans. A problem that goes by the name of Time.

The problem was that we just couldn’t get enough of it!

The other problem was that there also wasn’t enough of me to go around to help everyone. Thankfully we were able to get everyone started at the very least, and we got some cool photos too!

Ambition is a really great trait to possess, and it was wonderful to see in all of these kids. Unfortunately, time is always going to pose a problem, especially as they grow up.

After all, when working on a project ambition and design aren’t the only aspects to think about. It’s also necessary to think about the scope of a project, and what you’ll be able to handle on your own, or with a time limit. This week, they were able to see this play out in person, so hopefully the next time they encounter this, they’ll be able to handle it themselves.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Scroll through this gallery to witness the diverse artworks children created.

Can you hear the stories behind each of them?

Arts For All acknowledges the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. The City of Hamilton has developed an Urban Indigenous Strategy that will strengthen the City’s relationship with the Indigenous community and help promote a better understanding among all residents about Indigenous histories, cultures, experiences and contributions.
