Immersed

We spent 5 weeks at Central Public YMCA kinder program, and over these weeks we guided children through a variety of engaging crafts and activities. Each week introduced a new project and the campers consistently approached them with enthusiasm and imagination. The children really enjoyed exploring the new materials and asked questions about them and shared ideas of what they could make or add to the craft. It was inspiring to see the campers fully immerse themselves in the creative process. They didn’t just complete the craft — they experimented, and personalized them for themselves or their siblings or their parents.

The five weeks we spent at the camp really stuck us with how much growth, creativity and connection there was. Each week when we could come into the camp the kids would greet us with stories and questions and drawings they had made for us during prior days. The children’s participation also fostered a sense of community. They supported one another, celebrated each other’s successes, and shared techniques and ideas, creating an encouraging and collaborative atmosphere. Overall the program went very well and its important to us that we got to let the children express themselves in their own way.

Arts For All acknowledges the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. The City of Hamilton has developed an Urban Indigenous Strategy that will strengthen the City’s relationship with the Indigenous community and help promote a better understanding among all residents about Indigenous histories, cultures, experiences and contributions.
