A Welcoming Environment

During our third week at St Patrick, we worked with strips of fabric, cellophane, tissue paper, and other materials and used strips of tape to adhere them to hanging strings. Due to limited space, we decided to make a banner on the whiteboard, and the children quickly got to work filling the empty space with colour. As the banner got bigger and bigger, a couple of the kids had a great idea of making it into a welcome sign for the classroom. Working together, they meticulously traced and cut the letters out of tissue paper (not an easy task if you’ve worked with the material), even taking care to make sure the letters were in rainbow order. Then, once the banner was almost finished, they carefully taped the finished letters on with the help of some of the younger ones who became interested in their little project. The whole banner was one big collaborative piece from all the children, but, in particular, I really loved watching this group of children deliberately work together to make it something that they thought would improve the space. They showed such strong collaborative skills, and ended up helping with a banner so wonderful it remained up for the rest of the weeks I was teaching there. It felt like a physical representation of the children’s strong collaborative skills, and their instinct to help and build off of each other’s strengths.
