Building Communities Through Art!
During week two: SPACE programming with Winona EarlyON, the children were provided with coloured cardstock, tape, and drawing utensils which were used to create buildings such as houses, castles, and other structures! This week the children were encouraged to create their own space that they love, cherish, and wanted to express. With my help and the help of ECEs at the site, the children were able to generate ideas and explore their creativity.
One child that participated this week showed extreme interest and creativity in the different buildings they could create out of paper! This child experimented with many different materials like pencil crayons, markers, and pipe cleaners, which were used to decorate their creations.
The child that showed lots of interest was able to have conversations with their parent, the ECEs, and myself relating to the activity at hand. This child connected their knowledge of communities learned in school with the buildings they were creating, and this was very special to witness! The child exclaimed, “ I remember learning about communities in school!” to which the ECE and I raised questions like, “What kind of community are you creating?” “ What will be included in your community and what kind of buildings will there be?” This child was extremely insightful and was able to connect the dots between art and the outer world, and it was certainly impressing to say the least!
