A Meal from Home
In my final week at St. Ann’s, we introduced an activity that was definitely a hit with the students. We brought felt, paper and yarn for the students to make recipes and fake food with. The goal of the activity was to have the students share new recipes with each other in order to encourage exploration of different cultures and cuisines. Food has an incredible way of bringing people together, as it’s something almost everyone enjoys in some way.Â
One boy, took great joy in telling me and his classmates about his favorite food. He made rice and crab legs, which he told me his mother and grandmother prepared for him as a special treat. This intrigued some of his classmates who had never had such a dish before, and he happily shared with them what it is and how to prepare it. I thought this activity was really lovely because it got the students to learn about dishes they’ve never tried before, as well as had them connect with each other in a different way. I hope that some of the boy’s classmates try his crab dish now that it’s been recommended by a friend.
