Our fantastic Artasia team worked with children in Our fantastic Artasia team worked with children in over 20 locations this summer.

Together they told stories and spun yarn (literally). To activate Hamilton’s Charter of Rights of Children and Youth, they opened the “penny for your thoughts” lemonade stand at the curbside in their neighborhoods. They re-named their streets and parks to honour what matters most. They started upcycling old election signs into shelters for birds and humans too! They worked on beautiful signs and self-portraits to claim neighborhood spaces and shouted in joy: We Belong!

This week we are celebrating this process through the eyes of our youngest participants at the EarlyON Centers in 5 locations.

Magical moments happened in these locations!

We want to use this opportunity to thank our City of Hamilton EarlyON partners, Boys and Girls Club (Woodland at the Red Hill Valley Trail), Heritage Green (Maplewood Park), YMCA(Gourley Park) and HWCCCC(Winona).

This summer, young people in the Artasia program h This summer, young people in the Artasia program have expressed their commitments to building a better world. Kids have used Coroplast to imagine a city where everyone feels like they belong.

Building with donated coroplast from used election signs, kids have been expressing them selves all summer long on a range of themes. Here are some of the things that kids have been working on:

* Connecting to each other through digital and physical artforms

* Talking to people in our neighbourhoods about belonging by hosting a Drink Stand for our Rights and Responsibilities.

* Photographing our parks and streets through the lens of a neighbourhood audit and variations on the question “what if?”

* Considering the names of places, and celebrating our values by imagining what stories a name can hold.

* Examining the right to housing, by using recycled materials to make homes for humans and birds alike.
Building a sense of belonging by creating self portraits in the park.

What changes would you like to make to your city so everyone feels they belong?

** A big thank you to all the Artasia 2022 team members for these beautiful pictures**

Many young people in Canada feel like they don’ Many young people in Canada feel like they don’t belong. That’s why Arts For All’s Artasia Program is highlighting Hamilton’s Charter of Right of Children and Youth throughout our community in 2022. We believe that when we activate the rights of young people a more complete belonging is within reach.

This summer, we’re asking kids to photograph “what if?” tags throughout the spaces that matter most: their own classrooms, parks, and neighbourhoods. Each tag foregrounds one of the 18 rights in the Hamilton charter. We all have a right to be and to belong right here.

Together we can amplify children’s rights and build a better community where everyone feels that they belong.

The rights of Children and Youth are accompanied by participatory responsibilities for young people and adults. To spark change, children are committing to make changes in their own way.

You sure can make handmade #whatif signs! Where would you hang them? What would the sign say? Show us your signs!

Each year, Artasia connects young people to creati Each year, Artasia connects young people to creativity, and in 2022 we extend our wholesome habits of placemaking and empathy to share an important message: We Belong!

Through the arts, we aim to co-create a more welcoming world. We are caring for animals, plants, and the planet because they are our future. We’re connecting with our neighbours in local parks and streets, and sharing our ideas with community leaders. Using digital tools, we’re amplifying our voices, and putting our vision on the map.

In Artasia we are activating the Charter of Rights of Children & Youth (link in bio), created by young people in our region, and officially adopted by the city of Hamilton. By listening to children, giving them a voice, and taking seriously their ideas and art, we hope to carry forward and make visible this important work.

We have a wide span of summer activities planned. We’re telling stories and spinning yarn (literally). To activate Hamilton’s Charter of Rights of Children and Youth, we’re opening the “penny for your thoughts” lemonade stand at a curbside near you. We’re re-naming our streets and parks to honour what matters most. We’re upcycling old election signs into shelters for birds and humans too! We’re claiming our spaces with self-portraits. In Artasia, we are making it happen in our neighbourhoods.

We know that we belong here. Will you get on our side and help us build the future?

Stay tuned...!
